The Rs. 106-million Brahmaputra bridge,situated in the vicinity of the rail terminii of Amingaon and Pandu near Gauhati,about 4,000 ft. downstream of a gorge opposite the famous Kamakhya hills,will be completed by the end of this year.
The need for this mighty project was keenly felt far some years.Pre-war Assam was thinly populated with practically no industrial activity.After partition,a large number of displaced persons migrated to Assam.There was also a sudden upsurge of productive activity in the state with the launching of the Five-year plans.New industries started growing rapidly and new oil sources have been discovered.The output of tea and jute has also shot up.this has lead to a rapid increase in the State's transport requirements which,till now,have been prior.
